Roughs Part Two Assignment Two
I did my roughs in AI only because what I want to to visually is not possible to clearly do by hand. This exercise is tougher than the last because we are using an entire heading to visually describe the meaning of the heading. It's hard.

Finals for Project Two
Here are my finals. In the first "war" I created a pattern that reminded me of barbed wire fencing and filled a white "war" with the pattern. To me, it visually expresses the fencing in of war on society, physically and emotionally. In my second version, I used war in repetition as a readable pattern above and below the filled font. I am visually expressing two opposing forces closing in on each other. I found this project to be interesting in the way it forced me to reflect into "war's" definition, and emotional value, then further visually express it.

First set of roughs
Here are my first set of roughs. I am going to go in the direction of using typography to visually describe the definition of war. (two forces fighting against each other).

Assignment Two
We are going to be choosing one word and learning how to use type to visually describe a word. I chose War, and am using the font face "Impact".
Definition
War- A period of hostile relations between countries, states, or factions that leads to fighting between armed forces, especially in land, air, or sea battles.
A serious struggle, argument, or conflict between people.

Finals for Project One
Here are my finals for the project. We chose the two best roughs of each element of design. The next step in the process was converting the hand drawn roughs into digital replicas using illustrator. The final size of each type design is 4x4 inches. We will be mounting them all on black "wobble" boards, 6 to each.
Overall, the project was quite interesting. It was fun seeing how one letter, or part there of, can be used to change the shape of a square. Also, using one letter to trick the eye into seeing direction. After all, type is shape, and shapes can be used to create any principle or element of design.

Assignment One: Part Two Roughs

Type Assignment One
This was a very interesting/hard assignment. We used six elements of design and one letter to do the project. The idea was to use one letter, or part there of, to portray different elements of design. I am not sure if my attempt was very "skill-full", but I do know that I understood the elements of design.(Thanks to 2D design).

Good Vs. Bad Typography
Hello.
What makes "good" typography or "bad" typography? I am still not 100% sure, but after some Internet browsing I came across a theory that reminded me of the importance of one principle of design directly: balance. Balance is described as the distribution of visual weight of design elements within a composition. The equilibrium of opposing or interacting forces in a pictorial composition. A website described that the spacing between the letters of the first "flybwebmaster" is not equal in the first "flywebmaster". This, in my opinion, is related directly towards balance. Therefore, unlike the "good", the word is broken up to read fl-ywe-mas-ter, instead of one word flywebmaster. BUT, then I thought of how balance could be used in a "good" way to break up spacing intentionally to trick the eye. So I am still somewhat lost on good versus bad, I guess maybe it all comes back to the use of positive and negative space.

I am very new to theories and applications behind typography in design and am looking forward to expanding my knowledge on the subject this semester. I know there is an entire psychology behind type..... looking forward to learning more.
